PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Some Rhode Island workers who find themselves out of work because of storm damage from Sandy may be able to avoid the usual one-week delay in earning unemployment benefits.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee and state Labor and Training Director Charles Fogarty say employers need to seek a waiver for nonseasonal workers they have to lay off because of Sandy. State law provides for the waiver in case of a natural disaster or state emergency.
