So you've been doing your best to save for retirement, even squeezing every paycheck or tax refund to make them go further in preparing you for the day when you leave the day job. But what about spending some of that money on something other than necessities or health care? According to Money, there are 12 things you should consider splurging on because of the joy they can bring you during retirement—which could last anywhere from two to three decades or even longer. Lots of people do have special objectives for when they hit retirement—anywhere from launching a new career in a field they care about to going on a special trip they never had the time or money for during their working years. And then there's the (possible) relief at just no longer having to pinch pennies till they scream—but if that's undirected, you could find yourself just frittering away retirement money on things you don't care that much about and won't remember for very long (except possibly when you see the big hole they dug in your bank account). So why not plan an extravagance that will fill your soul with satisfaction not just in the short term, but in the years to come? "Just as we insist on retirees having an emergency fund available for unknown contingencies, we encourage them to also have a 'splurge fund' when possible for any planned or spontaneous special things they would like to do," William Stack, founder of Stack Financial Services in Salem, Missouri, is quoted saying in the report. The best approach involves splurging with excess funds, Stack adds: "Don't borrow or spend your emergency fund for something extraneous. Splurge on meaningful pursuits, but only with additional, nonessential funds set aside for that purpose." With that end in mind, you might want to set aside money in a separate account to do just that, whether you skim off some extra-high market returns on investments or simply take whatever's left from regular monthly expenses and save it in that other account. And once the balance is built up to where you want it, here are Money's suggestions on some ways to spend it that you might find rewarding all out of proportion to their cost.
