WASHINGTON-In the aftermath of Vermont Senator Jim Jeffords' party jump from Republican to Independent, the Senate has been concentrating on reorganizing itself to reflect the new Democratic control. In this effort Senator Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) has become the Senate Majority Leader, replacing Senator Trent Lott (R-Miss.), who is now the Minority Leader. Also in the mix is Senator Paul Sarbanes (D-Md.) replacing Phil Gramm (R-Texas) as Banking Committee chairman and Senator Max Baucus (D-Mont.) trading places with Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) as Finance Committee chairman. Jeffords' switch has stirred up speculation about Senator John McCain's (R-Ariz.) loyalty to the Republican party. He has denied that he is even considering a switch.
