RYE, N.Y. – A study by Electronic Bill Presentment and Payment firm Mobius Management Systems here shows yet again that most consumers think EBPP is a great idea, but they don't know if their billers offer it. "The lack of adoption has become a sort of self-fulfilling prophesy. I think when billers implement it, they're doing it half-heartedly. Consumers are interested, but they're not aware," said John Joseph, applications specialist for Mobius. According to the survey of 301 consumers, 61% of those ages 25 to 54 thought EBPP was a great idea, but 31% didn't know if any of their billers presented bills online. The numbers are worse by industry. The following is a breakdown of percentage of customers unaware if their biller in a specific industry has EBPP: * 82%, mortgage lenders, * 77%, cable providers, * 74%, utilities, * 62%, telecommunications, * 58%, credit card issuers, * 47%, Internet Service Providers. ISPs ranked first in attracting early adopters of EBPP, with 54% of those consumers who have adopted EBPP saying they pay their ISP with the service. ISPs beat out credit card issuers (47%), and telecommunication firms (40%). "Billers need to think globally and act locally as an individual biller, pushing the service really hard with their customers getting adoption numbers up," said Joseph.
