In reading your June 6 article on "Will handheld banking grow beyond niche into mainstream use?" I found, as I hope many did, a balanced article containing arguments from both sides of the question. However, I was surprised and somewhat disappointed as to the source of the negative remarks, as well as the foundation for said remarks. Leadership must come from a vision of what the future will hold, what service delivery opportunities will most likely exist, and who will be using those service opportunities if the credit union industry is to survive long term and attract "new blood" into our respective organizations. Leadership can never afford the luxury of ignoring the future because they personally don't have the need today. Those that did, or that did not have a vision of the future and embrace the forward-thinking technologies of their time … the telephone, the television, the airplane, the personal computer … suffered a significant loss in the respective marketplaces they once ruled. And while some applications of "new technology" may not be applicable in today's environment, can we afford not to explore its potential? How far behind the curve should we place ourselves before realizing that our personal habits may not be representative of future trends?
