TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – It's been more than six months since last year's Election Day, and the Florida Credit Union League is continuing the momentum of meeting with elected officials to brief them on credit union issues. On July 10, the FCUL held the first of what it says will be a series of "meet and greet" with local legislative delegations. On hand to meet the Tallahassee delegation were representatives and volunteers from 11 area credit unions. At the Tallahassee gathering were four state House members and one state senator: State Reps. Loranne Ausley (D-Tallahassee), Curtis Richardson (D-Tallahassee), Bev Kilmer (R-Quincy) and Will Kendrick (D-Carrabelle) and State Sen. Al Lawson (D-Tallahassee). Credit unions attending were: Envision CU, Sunshine State CU, Florida Commerce CU, FSH Employees CU, Florida Rural Electric, SCORE FCU, Southeast Corporate FCU, Tallahassee FCU, Tallahassee-Leon FCU and TMH FCU. Because of term limits enacted by Florida's voters, nearly half of the current members of the Florida Legislature are serving their first term. FCUL grassroots efforts during the campaign helped elect many of the new legislators. The league determined that a series of meetings to allow CU volunteers and staff to discuss CU issues with state legislators, particularly the newly elected ones, would be beneficial. It was our feeling that to continue the dialogue begun last year would help credit union folks know their legislators and would let legislators know their constituents, said Aletta Shutes, executive vice president, FCUL.
