Florida Commerce Credit Union, Tallahassee, has raised $4,615 for the 2001 March of Dimes during the WalkAmerica campaign. FCCU placed third in monies raised. With the help of credit union members, employees and volunteers sold special March of Dimes bean bag babies, paper sneakers, and solicited sponsor funds for the Walk. This is the fifth year Florida Commerce has participated in the campaign, having placed 8th in the corporate category in 2000. Florida Commerce is committed to serving its community and supports the efforts of the March of Dimes. Employees of FCCU enjoy participating in numerous community projects throughout the year including the American Heart Walk, March of Dimes WalkAmerica, food drives, and child adoption during the holidays. Lacamas Community Credit Union, Camas, Wash., has raised $19,000 for the Doernbecher Children's Hospital. The money will be used to provide medical care to the families of children who do not have the ability to pay. This year's contribution exceeded the credit union's goal of $1 per member and is the largest gift in its ninth consecutive year of participation. Doernbecher Children's Hospital is dedicated solely to the special needs of children. Every family has a private room, complete with its own shower and bathroom; parents' lounges and a research library make stays easier for family members; and large playrooms, courtyards, an in-house art therapy program help youngsters take their minds off their illnesses. Last year, Doernbecher helped more than 30,000 children. Virginia Credit Union, Richmond, Va., has sponsored the seventh annual Boulder Dash, which benefits Virginia Blood Services. Over $6,400 has been raised by the event. Of the 151 runners who registered, Anthony Damato (16:36) and Anna Pichrtova (17:06) won the overall male and female divisions. The 5K race was held in the Boulders Office Complex and was kicked off by VCU President Jane Watkins. In addition to sponsoring the race, VCU also provided 30 volunteers on the day of the event. The Ohio Credit Union Foundation, Dublin, Ohio, has committed $10,000 to help rebuild SmartMoney Community Services in Cincinnati's Over the Rhine neighborhood. The SmartMoney facility, which suffered significant damage during the recent social unrest, is home to a branch of Cincinnati Central Credit Union. The Foundation presented a check to SmartMoney representatives during the Ohio Credit Union System's Convention, where more than 1,400 credit union leaders from around the state attended. The funds from the OCUF will be used to re-install an ATM and to help rebuild SmartMoney. Cincinnati Central Credit Union's partnership with SmartMoney Community Services began in 1988. The credit union moved into the area when banks vacated the Over the Rhine neighborhood.
