WASHINGTON-Lee Williams, CEO of Aviation Associates Credit Union in Wichita, Kansas, will carry the weight of the credit union community behind him when he testifies before the Senate Banking Committee on the credit union view of predatory mortgage lending. At press time, his testimony was scheduled for Friday, July 27. Williams, who also chairs CUNA's State Issues Subcommittee, will be one of 18 witnesses to appear before the committee July 26 and 27. The hearings are intended to focus on the problems and responses of predatory mortgage lending. Williams' testimony will highlight the efforts of credit unions nationwide to curb predatory lending practices, specifically those that are intentionally deceptive to borrowers. The testimony will also distinguish the differences between alternative lending programs aimed at helping consumers re-build their credit history, and programs that abuse legitimate lending practices.
