WASHINGTON-For the second time this year, NAFCU met with Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy Pippa Malmgren to emphasize the efforts of credit unions to the administration. Attending the meeting were NAFCU President and CEO Fred Becker, Senior Vice President and General Counsel Bill Donovan, and Director of Regulatory Affairs Gwen Baker. "It is no secret that NAFCU has been pushing ahead on a number of fronts in our efforts to enhance the federal charter," Becker said. "Obviously, the administration is going to have a large hand in any financial services legislation and when issues that affect credit unions arise in that arena, we want to be in position to provide input." NAFCU really stressed regulatory issues during the one hour meeting, according to Baker, including charter conversion information, community charter issues (such as removing `local' from the definition of community and allowing community charters to serve groups previously adopted), Small Business Administration lending problems specific to credit unions, incidental powers, Regulatory Flexibility, and regulatory relief legislation. "We think she was very receptive," Baker commented. Malmgren will be speaking at NAFCU's Congressional Caucus on Monday September 24.
