MINNEAPOLIS-NCUA Board Member Geoff Bacino told a group at Liberty Enterprise's Marketing Summit to expect further challenges to credit union philosophies via courts at the state level. "Credit unions will probably see this strategy used in specific states around the country," he said. "Credit unions can't afford to rest on their laurels. They need to be prepared for the challenges." Bacino also told conference attendees of the many regulatory changes going on at NCUA, including the new incidental powers regulation, which permits credit unions to derive income from products previously limited, and the flexible examination schedule. "To me, a successful credit union is one that is responsive to its members. They should be dedicated to better serving their members rather than be dictated by a rigid NCUA examination schedule," he said. Much of this is made possible by the new attitude of the NCUA Board, he explained. "The mood has changed for the good on the board," Bacino said. "The tenor is positive and this should carry over to the credit union movement. We (the NCUA Board members) may not always agree, but there is a great deal of respect. That should, in turn, help the movement." Bacino called credit unions and credit union firms, "innovators" and commended them for their support of credit union causes, like the Campaign for Consumer Choice.
