US Airways Federal Credit Union, Moon Township, Pa., has awarded four students with the 2001 Ralph B. Canterbury Scholarship. Applicants were judged based on a number of criteria including academic performance; community activities/involvement; a statement of personal goals and an essay on "What is a credit union anyway?" This year's scholarship winners Nafeesa Hunt, Jocelyn Oberdick, Kirstin Williams and Brian Strike were each awarded $2,500. US Airways FCU has $530 million in assets and serves 98,962 members. Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit Union, Gaithersburg, Md., has awarded Tracey Craley a $1,000 scholarship. Scholarship applicants must be a member of the credit union's Young Executive Students Program and write an essay on the topic, "Why should you start saving at an early age and what options are available?" Craley will attend Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania. MAFCU has $140 million in assets and serves over 21,000 members. Silver State Schools Credit Union, Las Vegas, has awarded $11,000 in educational scholarships to help improve the quality and quantity of teachers in the Las Vegas area. The New Teacher Certification scholarship recipients are Janet M. Hope and Dominador Albacena. This year's Masters of Education Studies scholarships were awarded to the following members: Antoninette R. Lewis; Cynthia K. Hagan; Elrae Carino; Renee Aadand; Jennifer Gifford; Toshiko Bernau; Amy Gruss; Tina Quintana and Thomas Smith. Both scholarships offer $1,000per year and are renewable for an additional year by maintaining a 3.0 or better grade point average. The scholarships may be used at any Nevada college or university for tuition, books and other educational expenses. SSSCU has over $416 million in assets and serves more than 44,000 members. Philips Federal Credit Union, Fort Wayne, Ind., has awarded five $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors or college undergraduates who expressed a desire to further their education. Applicants are selected based on academic performance and leadership roles in extra-curricular activities. This year's scholarship recipients are Michael D. Gifford; Leah K. Schwartz; Yulia Khori; Cassandra J. Smith and Wen Jun Tu. Georgia Federal Credit Union, Atlanta, has awarded scholarships totaling $3,500 to six high school students. Recipients were selected based on essay response, academic achievement and community involvement. Parkview High School senior Andrew Thomas Rowan received the top award of $1,000. Other winners Elizabeth Jean Cain; Marcee Lynn Campbell; Ashley Marie Rice; Alex Seth Talley; and Elizabeth Suzanne Yates each received $500. GFCU has $227 million in assets and serves 142,154 members.
