ONTARIO – Credit Union Central of Ontario has announced that CUs here have so far raised more than $196,000 for U.S. disaster relief efforts. Niagara Credit Union alone has collected $72,000 from members. The majority of the funds will be forwarded to the Red Cross with the remainder distributed to support the firefighters, police and other victims of the September 11 tragedies. According to the CUCO, close to 1.4 million Ontario residents now belong to credit unions, up slightly over last year. In addition, as of June 30, combined assets of Ontario's credit unions reached $13.5 billion- an increase of nearly $1 billion over the same period last year.
