LATHAM, N.Y.- At press time, credit unions have so far raised more than $1 million for relief efforts related to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. With $660,801 contributed to the New York Disaster Relief Fund and the National CU Foundation's CUs Rebuild America Fund balance at $353,078, help is still on the way for the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks as donations will be accepted until November 22. Designed to support widespread, non-credit union specific relief efforts, CURA donations will be split 75% to the Red Cross, which is focusing on such assistance as food, shelter, and medical care and 25% to the September 11th Fund, for such long-term support as mortgage payment assistance and relocation expenses. The NY Disaster Relief Fund donations will help the most severely impacted Manhattan credit unions, and their staff, volunteers, members and families who suffered losses. Since the tragedy has occurred, Credit Union Times has attempted to chronicle all donations that have been made by CUs that have been submitted to the newspaper. (Please see CU Times issues of Sept. 26, Oct. 10, Oct. 24 and Oct. 31) Here are the latest CU efforts: Pacific Service CU, has donated $10,000 to the American Red Cross Liberty Disaster Fund. The Fund supports the immediate and emerging efforts of the American Red Cross to alleviate human suffering brought on by the attacks of September 11. Cabrillo Credit Union raised over $5,000 in recent fundraising activities to assist the families of victims of the September 11th attack on America. The Texas Credit Union Foundation has received more than $150,000 for the U.S.A. Recovery Fund it set up following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. TCUF will accept donations through Thanksgiving. To date, more than 70 Texas credit unions, as well as several chapters and individuals have contributed to the fund. The Foundation will begin allocating funds in December. Contributors may specify which fund they want their monies to go to: the New York State Credit Union Foundation, the Pentagon Disaster Relief Fund or the CURA Fund. To make a donation to the U.S.A. Together with the justice and law enforcement communities, JFCU raised $25,000 for those affected by the events of September 11. Truliant Federal Credit Union's staff, volunteers and members all pitched in to raise funds for the disaster relief efforts. Truliant will continue its fundraising efforts to reach its goal of $7,500, which will be matched by the credit union's charitable contribution fund. "We hope we can do something very meaningful with $15,000 to help those in need," said Marc Schaefer, Truliant CEO. The staff of Federal Employees Credit Union in Oklahoma City sent a check that represented the money that had been budgeted for its fall picnic, saying, "The families and victims affected by this heinous crime are in our thoughts and prayers." The Vermont Credit Union League sent a check for $500 raised at a recent golf outing. From the Portland, Oregon Postal Employees Credit Union came a donation that included one employee's airline ticket refund. "The people of New York City are in our thoughts and prayers here in Portland, Oregon," the note said. In addition, a contribution came from the Education Credit Union Co-operative Limited of Victoria, Australia. Shoreline Credit Union also donated and sent a note saying , "we cannot imagine what it must be like to have nothing left.not even a pencil to restart one's operations." And from Eagle Community Credit Union came a check for over $4,000, and a note that the funds "were made possible by donations from our employees who participated in day-off drawings, as well as individual contributions from staff." The credit union matched these donations. SSA Baltimore Federal Credit Union has donated over $2,500 to the American Red Cross relief efforts. Security Service Federal Credit Union has donated $25,000 to the American Red Cross. Card Services for Credit Unions, Inc., has donated $25,000 the CURA Fund. USA Federal Credit Union has raised $8,800 for the American Red Cross. Earthmover Credit Union has raised $3,377.65 for the American Red Cross. [email protected]
