WASHINGTON-While Washington and the rest of the country attempted to return to life as usual following the terrorist attacks of September 11, there were some obvious voids. Inside the credit union community, several trade associations were forced to cancel or postpone conferences at costly expenses to the groups. The largest loss came from CUNA's Annual Symposium to be held in San Francisco slated to start September 22. CUNA took a hit of $600,000 when it canceled the meeting. Additionally, CUNA had to cancel its annual general meeting that was supposed to take place in connection with the Symposium September 24. Several Hike the Hills were also scrapped because of the inaccessibility of the Washington area. NAFCU also announced the cancellation of its September conference, the annual Congressional Caucus in Washington, out of respect for the tragedies and the extremely tight security around Capitol Hill. The NAFCU Board approved the move by voice vote without objection. The association's losses were expected to be around $20,000. NASCUS was the first group to decide to reschedule its Annual Meeting and Convention in Dana Point, California. The new dates are December 14 through 18 and because the group was able to reschedule, losses were expected to total just a few thousand dollars. Credit Union Times will be on the scene covering the NASCUS conference. NACUSO was to hold its Leadership Conference in Hawaii September 19 through 21, and after saying the show would go on, ended up postponing the conference twice.
