<p>By MYRIAM BOURJOLLY CU Times Staff Reporter LATHAM, N.Y. -With over $1 million collected by the New York Credit Union Foundation for the Disaster Relief Fund the disbursement process for the victims' families has finally begun. Credit union members from any state or country whose family members fell victim to the September 11 terrorist attacks will receive $1,000 for each loss. "We felt it was only fair to try to help all of the credit union families from any credit union around the world whose lives were affected," said James Mack, Foundation Chairman and Manager of St. Clare's Hospital EFCU in Schenectady. According to Mack, credit union participation is needed to help locate those who qualify for the funds. Credit unions are urged to step forward if a victim was among their members and apply in conjunction with the family members of victims. Once the application is reviewed, the Foundation will then forward the funds to the credit union for distribution. NYSCUL Public Relations/Marketing Director Kathy Febraio wants it known that 100% of the donations received can and will be distributed. "This initial disbursement was based on applying the approximately 25% of the general population that belong to a CU to the total number of an estimated 4,000-5,000 victims," said Febraio. "The Trustees will then meet again later on in the year to determine what funds are remaining and how to distribute them based on what applicants are requesting." At press time only one application had been received from the family of Korean American Catholic board member Huyn Joon Lee. The foundation has already made a contribution to his family. Disaster Relief Fund grant applications are available on the League's Web site, www.nyscul.org. For more information contact Foundation Executive Director Frank Kerbein at (800) 342-9835, ext. 8107, or e-mail him at [email protected]. Applications must be received by April 30, 2002.
