A report by Aberdeen Group shows more evidence that wellness programs are a popular way to reduce health care costs. Sixty-three percent of employers surveyed claimed lowering costs as the main reason for benefits management. Thirty-eight percent offer disease management programs and 35 percent offer wellness programs.

"Companies are increasingly realizing the old 'ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure' adage," said the report's author David Weldon, a research analyst for Aberdeen. "If you're really aggressive in disease management programs and wellness programs, you can tie them to what employees pay for their health-care management and see a cost reduction."

He said the most effective programs are the ones chosen by employees, and that allow them to customize the program to fit their needs.
