I think I'd forgotten how tense an election year can be.
How else can I explain my lapse yesterday? I thought opening my blog — which I've always approached with a lighter, "just chatting over a beer" touch — with a joke would draw people in and maybe bring out a few chuckles.
Wow, called that one wrong. It's not the first time I've had a joke bomb (just ask my boss), but it's certainly the most public.

Not only did the jab fail to lighten the mood, it completely undermined the entire blog entry. While I'm a huge fan of spirited debate, yesterday's discussion veered way off course. And I have only myself to blame for that. I took a legitimate news story about a huge public company, commented on it and buried whatever insight I might have had beneath an obvious (and not all that original) insult.
I'd also be remiss if I didn't chastise the media a little bit here for reporting the so-called facts of this story yesterday without doing any real fact checking — present company included. We should all know better than to take Congressmen at their word.
I'll be more diligent going forward if you'll continue to help keep me on my toes.
