Drivers may find more bikers on the road soon. The bailout plan, signed Oct. 3 by President Bush, includes a transportation fringe benefit for bicycle commuters. Effective Jan. 1, 2009, employees who use a bicycle to get from home to work will be eligible for a reimbursement on the cost of purchasing a bicycle, repairs and improvements, and storage.
There are some caveats. Employees must use the bicycle for a "substantial portion" of their commutes – no word on what constitutes "substantial" – and will only be reimbursed for months they meet the requirements. Employees can receive $20 per month for each month they meet the requirements.
