Will you stay out on the field and try to play through the showers, ignoring that lightning on the horizon? Or have you already bolted for the dugout?
It's funny. The natural reaction always seem to be to retreat or retrench during times of crisis, yet those responses are typically ill-advised — a lot like punching the brakes as you start to slide sideways over a patch of black ice.

What you need to do is think outside the box. If employers are cutting costs — or simply standing pat — maybe it's time you considered an additional low or no-cost value add. Employee assistance programs are one of the best examples here.
Aetna, for example, reported just this week that calls are pouring into their own EAP, with employees looking for help with stress, anxiety, financial assistance and a host of other issues. During the third quarter, the company witnessed a 60 percent jump in the number of calls over the same period a year ago.
