Teachers are no better off than the rest of us when it comes to retirement. According to MetLife's 7th Annual Study of Employee Benefits Trends, nearly 60 percent of education employees are "extremely concerned" about having a comprehensive financial plan for retirement and 69 percent say they don't feel they have control of their finances.

Employees working in education are surprisingly reticent to get financial guidance. Only 40 percent of those surveyed who said they had tried to determine how much they'll need in retirement have talked to an advisor. What's worse, 40 percent haven't taken any steps at all.
