See, this is exactly what I was trying to avoid.
Just a couple of weeks back, I warned against making crazy (for lack of a better word) arguments against the health care reform proposals being bounced around the halls of Capitol Hill.
As I said – and made pretty clear – there are enough things wrong with this legislation that we don't need to dream up conspiracy theory, birther-type arguments to fight against it. Those Oliver Stone forays into fantasy only hurt our cause and make us look like card-carrying fringe nuts.

So then what happens? Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin fires off a Facebook update Saturday (Facebook, really?), ringing the (false) alarm that Obama's health care reform included "death panels" that threatened the life of her child Trig, born with Down Syndrome. This claim might have earned more than its fair share of media attention, but at the end of the day, it only makes us look like crazed liars who'll do anything to kill reform.
Not to be outdone and never one to shy from a mic, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi took the podium Monday to call every single one of us who second guesses this hasty, costly reform "un-American." Seems she's fed up with people disrupting her town hall meetings with, you know, questions and stuff. That pesky free speech is so un-American.
Make no mistake, the court of public opinion is where this thing will be decided. Which side do you want to be on?
