I suppose it's only fitting that on the eve of my 40th birthday I get an e-mail touting the latest retirement survey.
This latest research – a rare bipartisan effort conducted by Lake Research Partners and Public Opinion Strategies – uncovers a truth that both snoozes and startles at the same time. It seems voters are not only stressed out about retirement but worried enough to go to the polls over it.
Nearly 75 percent voters are worried about retirement, which shouldn't surprise any of us, and nearly two-thirds of them think Congress should do something about it – shocking given the anti-government coursing through the airwaves.

Americans have never been more worried about retirement (it's about damn time), and it looks like they want help. And not necessarily in the form of federal programs, handouts or tax tweaks. Those polled simply want "more retirement options that help retirees make sure their savings last throughout their lifetime." In fact, 45 percent of those polled admitted a candidate's commitment to this issue would be a huge factor when they went to the ballot box.
But you won't hear about this on CNN, where health care reform still dominates so much of the dialogue. Or over on Fox, where it's all about tea parties or mosques.
But if you think this many voters want help from the elected officials when it comes to retirement, how many more of them expect it from their brokers?
