In the second quarter of 2010, individual and family health savings account programs grew by a larger number than in the first quarter of 2010, finds the the Consumer Driven Healthcare Institute in its Q2'10 Consumer Driven Healthcare Market Data Advisory.

Individual HSA programs grew an average of 6 percent over the first quarter, an increase of 4 percent in Q1'10 while family HSA programs increased an average of 5 percent over the first quarter, a 4 percent gain from Q1'10.

"Following the passage of health care reform in Q1'10, consumer adoption of both individual and family health savings accounts again began to accelerate," says Steve Parente, PhD, professor, Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota and CDHCI Academic Advisory Board chair. "As health care deductibles continue to rise and consumers become increasingly responsible for out-of-pocket health care costs, we believe this trend will continue with consumers seeking ways to maximize their pretax dollars for use in current and future health-related spending and investment."
