CHICAGO-A job forecast survey released by CareerBuilder in conjunction with USA Today reported that 28 percent of employers hired full-time, permanent employees during Q1 2011. This figure is the highest since Q1 2008, and the hiring momentum is anticipated to continue during the second quarter of 2011.
In a previous survey CareerBuilder/USA TODAY survey conducted in December 2010, 23 percent of employers expected to hire full-time, permanent employees during Q1 2011. The actual amount of 28 percent marks seven consecutive quarters in which actual hiring practices exceeded projections.
Though 10 percent of those polled said they decreased their headcounts during the first quarter, this was an improvement over the 12 percent decrease from the first quarter of 2010. Sixty-two percent said there was no change in their number of full-time, permanent employees.

Harris Interactive conducted the survey between February 21 to March 10, 2011 among more than 2,800 hiring managers and human resources professionals, and more than 5,600 workers across a variety of industries.
"While employers are keeping a close eye on world events, their confidence levels in regard to recruitment have remained intact," said Matt Ferguson, CEO of CareerBuilder in a press release discussing the survey's results. "Our latest survey points to continued, measured gains over the next three months. As the nation moves toward greater financial stability, more employers are investing in talent for the long-term."
On the down side, however, at least for employers, is that more job openings mean more competition for skilled talent. One-third of employers in the survey acknowledged their concerns that top performer might seek employment opportunities outside their organizations, especially as the economy improves. Fourteen percent reported that top talent already left their organizations during the first quarter of this year.
