The Census Bureau surveys U.S. business establishments once every five years. Data from the most recent 2007 survey is now being released and can help you identify your most attractive target markets of business owners.
To access the data base, go to http://factfinder.census.gov and choose "Economic Census" and "get data."
To obtain the 2007 Economic Census and Surveys, try running a "Quick Report" to drill down into geography data at the county level. Hint: Search the data base by NAICS industry codes in which you want to find small business clients.

For each four-digit code, you can obtain (on a county-by-county basis) the number of firms, their total sales, total annual payrolls and number of paid employees. To locate NAICS industry codes for occupations or professions that you want to target, a search tool is available here: http://www.naics.com/search.htm
