COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio Gov. John Kasich has signed a budget sending $579 million to the state Bureau of Workers' Compensation and the commission that resolves disputes over workplace injuries.
The spending blueprint was signed Monday. It cuts funding to the bureau and the Industrial Commission by almost $79 million. The agencies are funded through insurance assessments on employers, so the governor says the cut returns money to Ohio businesses.
Kasich declined a line-item veto pushed by the liberal think tank Innovation Ohio. It sought to strike about $1 million in funding for the Workers' Compensation Council. The council's sole staff member was reassigned last month. Kasich spokesman Rob Nichols said the governor presumes lawmakers who oversee the council intend to hire new staff.
