CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — Four unions representing Southern Illinois University at Carbondale workers and teaching staff have filed notice they may strike.

The notice by the Faculty Association, Non-Tenure Track Faculty Association, the Association of Civil ServiceEmployees and Graduate Assistants United was filed Thursday with the Illinois Education Association.

Filing a notice of intent to strike is a procedure that must be completed, according the federal Labor Act, before any action can be taken. It does not mean the unions will strike.

Chancellor Rita Cheng said faculty unions have received notification from the university of its desire to return to the bargaining table.

History professor Natasha Zaretsky says the action was taken because of the administration imposing terms on the faculty, staff and graduate assistants without fair negotiations.
