WASHINGTON (AP) — D.C. Public Schools officials are revising the number of teachers and other school employees being told their jobs will be eliminated.

On Tuesday, officials said 745 employees would be affected, including 384 teachers, librarians and counselors who will have to apply for other jobs in the school system.

On Monday, the school system had said about 660 teachers and other school employees would have to reapply for other jobs because of shifting budgets and enrollment.

The process known as "excessing" allows for a redistribution of jobs. Some schools lose positions, which then go to other schools. But a new labor contract no longer guarantees excessed teachers a job placement.

Nathan Saunders, the president of the Washington Teachers' Union, has said excessing is just a way to remove older teachers.
