TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has presented a health benefits proposal to the state's largest public worker union — at the bargaining table.

The Communications Workers of America filed a labor grievance against the administration after Christie previously said he wouldn't bargain over health benefits.

The first-term Republican wants to increase the amount public workers pay. He says the hike is needed because the health insurance fund is $67 billion in the red.

Christie supports legislation that would require government workers to pay 30 percent of their health care premiums. The proposal he's put on the bargaining table is comparable.

CWA has its own health care giveback proposal, which it says would save $240 million in the fourth and final year of a new contract.
