WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court will decide whether workers can challenge a union's decision to charge extra fees to members and nonmembers without sending out a special notice.
The high court agreed Monday to hear an appeal from California workers who want to stop the Service Employees International Union from collecting extra money from nonmembers.
All California state employees are required to pay something to the union for its representation of them, and the union is required to tell employees how the money is spent and how to object.

The union wanted to collect a special assessment for a "Political Fight Back Fund" in 2005. The plaintiffs wanted the union to give them a new notice and a new chance to object.
Lower courts have thrown out the lawsuit.
