LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Participation in a Nebraska wellness program designed to lower health care costs and improve productivity has increased to more than 30 percent.
Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman said Wednesday that more than 3,900 state employees who receive health insurance benefits are now participating. That's 30 percent of the total who collect health benefits, up from 25 percent in the last fiscal year.
The state created its wellness plan in 2009, and paired it with healthy living educational programs. Heineman said more than 1,400 employees and spouses are participating in an educational program that allows them to enroll.

State officials say it is too early to know exactly how much money the program could save the state, but the program has helped some employees catch early signs of health problems.
