PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia School District says it will be offering teaching positions for the upcoming school year to 325 teachers laid off earlier this summer.
Officials say additional teachers may be given an opportunity to return over the next few weeks as the district fills 1,335 positions.
The district says teachers with the most seniority within a subject area will be given priority in rehiring per the collective bargaining agreement.

The district in June began issuing layoff notices to more than 3,000 teachers and other employees, but the union objected and won an order temporarily blocking 1,523 teacher layoffs. Under an agreement between the district and the union, layoffs of more than 1,000 teachers were allowed to proceed while proceedings for several hundred more headed to arbitration.
