HealthLeaders-InterStudy, a provider of managed care market intelligence, reports that employer groups in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri (also known as the Heartland) are looking to health insurers to assist in controlling costs. According to the recent Heartland Health Plan Analysis, more employers are turning to high-deductible and self-insurance health plans to escape mandates and control costs.

As a result, more employers will begin offering preventive measures such as waiving of copays for drugs used to treat chronic conditions, creating better drug adherence and fewer preventable emergency room and hospital visits among employees, according to the report.
