PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island is extending the hours for unemployed residents to file jobless claims after Tropical Storm Irene disrupted phone and computer service around the state.

The state's Department of Labor and Training says it will open its automated telephone service at noon Wednesday instead of 3 p.m. The department's call center will extend operational hours on Tuesday and Thursday until 5 p.m.

Also, career centers in West Warwick and South Kingstown will extend their normal hours of operation to help unemployed Rhode Islanders who lost phone and computer service during the storm.
