U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius says she's eager to work with the state to find ways to ease the financial strain of rising Medicaid costs.

Sebelius, who ended a four-day visit to Alaska Thursday, said her agency has been working with states, one-on-one, to try to find solutions that work for each. She said there are waivers and flexibility within the law — including some provisions that states aren't aware of — that they can take advantage of.

Medicaid costs have been blamed for helping drive the rise of Alaska's operating budget.

The issue came up during Sebelius' meeting with Gov. Sean Parnell Tuesday. She said she left it to him to decide when the sit-down, to take a closer look at the state's program, should occur.
