DEERFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Drugstore operator Walgreen Co. said Tuesday it is hiring the chief medical officer of health insurer Cigna Corp. for a new role as vice president of health and wellness services and solutions.

Walgreen said Jeffrey Kang will join the company on Oct. 31. Kang, 55, will report to the president of its Pharmacy, Health and Wellness division, Kermit Crawford.

Kang has worked for Cigna, which is based in Bloomfield, Conn., since 2002. Before that, he was chief medical officer for the federal government's Office of Managed Care and was chief clinical officer for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The company also said it has hired Mike Ellis, 53, as vice president for specialty pharmacy and infusion drugs. The company said Ellis most recently managed private investments for companies in health care and other industries. Both positions are newly created.

Shares of Walgreen fell 12 cents to $33.55 in morning trading Tuesday.
