I've struggled with deadlines my entire working life. It's the risk you run when you chase a journalism career.
I think it was Karl Kraus who said a journalist is "a person without any ideas but with an ability to express them; a writer whose skill is improved by a deadline: the more time he has, the worse he writes."
That certainly describes the way I've worked – and why I could never make a career out of freelancing. The deadline isn't just my muse. She's my morning coffee, my evening scotch and every keystroke in between.

So, maybe someone else can explain to me how the so-called super committee waves the white flag before the deadline even got here…hell, the French usually take longer to give up.
It also looks like the knee-jerk reaction is to blame the president, who certainly could use some lessons in leadership, but the buck should stop with the people whose actual job it was to slash the deficit. And this isn't rocket science. In fact, here's a thought, let's kill the Bush era tax cuts – the single greatest contributor to the deficit right now – and gut all the stimulus spending, which has done little more than boost the stock prices of the bigger banks and Fortune 500 companies anyway.
What's that? That would make everybody mad? Well, if I remember correctly, that's what compromises – our political system's biggest driver – are supposed to do. Everyone gets a little something they want, walks away disgruntled and we move on.
Now we got nothing but more of what don't need: venomous rhetoric and more blame to go around than a Greek tragedy – or economy.
I actually like how the National Center for Policy Analysis put it: "A glimmer of good news is that $1.2 trillion in cuts will be imposed over the next 10 years regardless. The bad news is that Congress borrowed $1.3 trillion this year alone."
Everyone claims the system is broken, but the stark, simple fact of the matter is that it's not. The founders designed Congress to move slowly – if not quite this emotionally. What's become a problem is our citizen legislators have morphed into a political caste so removed from the rest of us they don't even remember what we look like.
