Mercer has released its 2012 Guide to Social Security and 2012 Medicare booklets. The publications help retirees understand both social programs so they can better plan for retirement.

Changes to both programs took effect on Jan. 1, and that information is included in the Mercer booklets.

They give simple explanations of the programs, recent changes and cost and benefit amounts for 2012.

This is the 40th edition of the 2012 Guide to Social Security. The 64-page booklet includes major changes for 2012, retirement benefits, disability benefits, survivor benefits, who receives benefits, easy reference monthly benefit tables, Medicare benefits overview, a To Do section and answers to frequently asked questions about Social Security.

The 2012 Medicare booklet is in its 29th edition and includes major Medicare changes for 2012, what is covered and not covered, enrollment and eligibility, Part A, Part B, Part C and Part D.
