HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana's Department of Transportation and the union that represents its heavy equipment operators have reached a tentative contract agreement, ending a strike threat by snow plow drivers, officials said Friday.
Chief labor negotiator Paula Stoll said the agreement with the Public Employees Craft Council was reached late Thursday after hours of mediation.
Stoll said the agreement does not include a pay raise, but the state has agreed to consider proposals to allow more employees to work four 10-hour shifts each week during the summer.

The agreement covers about 300 employees, the majority of whom are snow plow and heavy equipment operators. It also covers operating engineers, machinists and painters.
Daniel Doogan, secretary-treasurer of the Teamsters Local, said the agreement will be mailed to members for ratification. It could take up to two weeks to learn the results, he said.
