WASHINGTON (AP) — A senior Republican is demanding an explanation for a $111 billion jump in the estimated cost of helping middle-class Americans buy insurance under President Barack Obama's health overhaul.
The administration says the big increase from last year's estimate is no cause for alarm.
Starting in 2014, many middle-class people will get subsidies to help buy coverage in new state markets. This year's budget shows a 30 percent cost increase over 10 years. The revised numbers are buried deep in the president's budget.

Officials say it's mostly due to newly signed legislation raising costs for one part of the health care law that still saves the government money overall. The rest is due to technical changes.
