Drugstore chain giant Walgreens entered into a three-year contract with the AARP to deliver retail drugstore program benefits to its members belonging to the 50-plus age group, Walgreen and AARP said in a joint announcement.
The groups said the new deal is aimed at further enhancing their long-standing relationship that began in 2006. They did not disclose any financial terms.
The new deal will create a retail drugstore program and member/community outreach, the groups said.

The retail drugstore program will offer new deals for those with an AARP card; online discount deals at aarp.walgreens.com; and new pharmacy benefits focused on "the pharmacy experience, including accessing pharmacists by phone, online chat and in-person interactions." Additional benefits could include education and tools to help members manage new prescriptions that will be tested throughout the year before potential national rollout.
The groups have an AARP/Walgreen Wellness Tour that has "proved successful in bringing more than $60 million in free health tests to communities across America during the past three years," said AARP CEO A. Barry Rand. "We are looking forward to bringing a new tour, the Walgreens Way to Well Health Tour with AARP, to many more Americans, particularly in medically underserved areas of the country."
Since 2006, Walgreens and AARP have created initiatives such as discounts for AARP members, the AARP/Walgreens Wellness Tour, AARP membership card offers, online discounts for health and wellness products, in-store AARP membership drives and "Medicines Made Easy" education.
The deal with AARP will likely help the company's sales after Walgreen parted ways with Express Scripts in December after the companies haggled unsuccessfully over terms for a new deal.
Last month, Walgreen Co. agreed to buy assets of BioScrip's specialty and mail service pharmacy businesses for $225 million.
