ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico businesses will save more than $81 million this year on the premiums they pay into the state's unemployment compensation fund under legislation signed into law Monday by Gov. Susana Martinez.
The Republican governor said the legislation along with a package of other tax reforms passed during the recent 30-day legislative session are aimed at giving businesses an opportunity to recover from the economic hard times that have swept the nation.
"It gives businesses the opportunity to keep their doors open here in our state and to hire another individual if they're able. It allows them not to have their taxes go up as we turn the corner in recovery," Martinez said. "This will provide some relief to those businesses that would have felt that pinch of a massive tax increase."
