The U.S. Department of Labor is awarding a $5 million National Emergency Grant to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry to provide re-employment services to approximately 1,000 workers impacted by the closure of two area oil refineries.
The refineries provided jobs at ConocoPhillips' Trainer facility and Sunoco Inc.'s Marcus Hook facility. Contractors were also employed at both locations.
"Anytime major employers shut their doors, communities suffer," says Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. "This federal grant aims to help lessen the negative impact of these closures by providing re-employment and retraining services, so impacted workers can more effectively compete for new jobs in growing industries."

ConocoPhillips and Sunoco announced in 2011 that the refineries would close if buyers could not be found. The purpose of the DOL's grant is to provide dislocated workers with thorough employment-related services, including occupational skills training, in an effort to help them re-enter the work force in improving sectors of the local economy.
National Emergency Grants are included in the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are distributed based on a state or commonwealth's ability to meet certain guidelines.
