Health care professionals are increasingly going digital, a new study suggests.

A third of doctors and others in the industry said they used social media when looking for a job in 2011, according to AMN Healthcare's social media survey. Only about 20 percent did so in 2010.

Nearly half of the 2,790 people surveyed said they use social media for professional networking.

More are using mobile job alerts year-over-year and success rates are up as well, the report finds. Of those using job alerts, 10 percent received an interview, 14 percent received a job offer and 8 percent secured a job (compared to just 1 percent securing a job from social media in 2010).

Physicians continue to be the heaviest users of mobile devices among their medical colleagues for professional reasons; 41 percent of physicians cited use of mobile devices or tablets for health care-related content or jobs in 2011.

Facebook was their favorite site, chosen by 75 percent of health care professionals for the best site to search for career-seeking opportunities.

The survey also found 2011 was a big year for hospitals joining the social media evolution, as 1,229 hospitals used social media in 2011, compared with just 391 in 2009.

This is relevant news for those searching for a career in health care, the survey notes, as health care occupations represent half of the 20 fastest growing occupations in the economy, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
