I was born poor and white in a Kansas City suburb that had more in common with trailer parks than gated subdivisions. To use the politically incorrect—and still painful—vernacular, I grew up white trash.

 

Let's assume for the moment that education is the key to 401(k) participation. But where can education provide the biggest oomph?

 

I think one of the most important pieces of information that's come out of the coverage is this: Americans just don't get it.

 

A hard-struck participant needing a $15,000 advance on their 401(k) loses $200,000 of retirement savings. This is not the best plan of action.
