Last week's blog about the differences between D.C. and San Antonio gave me an idea: Let's find out where the most lucrative markets are for health brokers.

To start, I looked at every city with at least 50 large health plans. Next, I used the data on FreeERISA to calculate the expected fees and commissions the brokers on those plans were receiving, and finally adjusted those amounts by the median income levels of those cities.

And so, without further ado, here's why you should think about scouting your next move>>

20) Las Vegas

Large Health Policies: 143

Adjusted Median Broker Compensation: $21,472

OK, so maybe Sin City hasn't exactly been boomtown since the housing bubble, but at least if you're a broker you know you have a better shot selling health than you do at the slots.

arlington

19) Arlington, Va.

Large Health Policies: 89

Adjusted Median Broker Compensation: $21,598

This is in FreeERISA's backyard, so not only do you have a golden opportunity to make sales, but you can actually stop by and say hello to the people behind the world's largest employee benefits data site.

18) Cincinnati

Large Health Policies: 278

Adjusted Median Broker Compensation: $22,517

On the positive side, there are more policies up for grabs in this city than in any other in the top 20. The downside is, you have to move to Cincinnati.

Fort Worth: It's not just an airport.

rockville md

16) Rockville, Md.

Large Health Policies: 78

Adjusted Median Broker Compensation: $24,688

Yet another D.C. suburb in the top 20. I can vouch for our many museums and volatile political climate.

14) Alexandria, Va.

Large Health Policies: 79

Adjusted Median Broker Compensation: $25,549

I should probably warn you: The D.C. area has better opportunities for health brokers than any other metro area. And we're only an hour from Virginia wine country.

long beach

13) Long Beach, Calif.

Large Health Policies: 57

Adjusted Median Broker Compensation: $25,883

Long Beach has the distinction of being the only city on the West Coast to crack the top 20. Sorry, West Coasters, looks like you have to jump ship if you want to go where the money is.

reston va.

12) Reston, Va.

Large Health Policies: 65

Adjusted Median Broker Compensation: $25,861

OK, this is the last D.C. suburb in the top 20. It's only 15 minutes from my house, too; maybe I should consider a career shift. Anyone hiring?

raleigh

11) Raleigh, N.C.

Large Health Policies: 86

Adjusted Median Broker Compensation: $27,422

It seems like Raleigh makes a lot of "Top City" lists, but this is probably the first one for health brokers.

Tune in next week where we count down to number one.
