According to the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans, upholding the Affordable Care Act improves the nation's health care safety net for individuals, employers and the government.
"Today's ruling marks a milestone in the discussion of health care in America, but the Affordable Care Act is just the beginning of the process," says Michael Wilson, CEO of International Foundation. "Even with the ACA being upheld, many of our members are still in a wait-and-see mode until after this fall's presidential election."
The recent International Foundation's Health Care Reform: 2012 Employer Actions Update survey finds that 52.1 percent of single-employers and corporations who were first waiting on the decision for health care reform planning and implementation are also awaiting the results of the 2012 presidential and congressional elections.

"We're at the beginning of the process, much like when ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Security Act) was enacted in 1974, and almost 40 years later, we're still working through that process and modifying that law," Wilson says. "I would expect the health care law to undergo the same process, and we will probably still be working on it in 30 years."
The International Foundation maintains that upholding ACA allows more time for employers and the government to focus on cost and quality of care.
"Clearly what we're talking about at this point in time is really trying to manage health care costs and address controlling and decreasing costs in the future," says Paul Hackleman, health care and public employer analyst for International Foundation. "The Foundation will continue to educate its members on strategies to address health care costs, such as wellness and value-based health care initiatives."
According to another recent International Foundation survey Wellness Programs and Value-Based Health Care, wellness initiatives can effectively manage health care costs. In fact, seven in 10 respondents offering wellness programs find that for each dollar they spend, between $1-3 is saved on health care.
