Most services in an employee assistance program cater to a broad group of workers, but some EAPs have decided to take a more specialized approach.

Industry sources say that EAP providers want to keep a diverse portfolio of clients to maintain their strength in the market and avoid economic stresses felt by certain industries. But at Physician Wellness Services in Minneapolis, Minn., the focus is on doctors and nurses.

According the Mitchell Best, CEO of Physician Wellness Services, doctors and nurses need a specialized set of EAP services to perform their duties effectively in today's clinics and hospitals. So, an EAP's positive influence in a physician's work can mean better patient safety, increased productivity and fewer mistakes.

"Our services are provided by physicians, so physicians feel comfortable reaching out to get answers to their questions," Best says. "A physician's stress is also greater than the general population's. There's not enough time in the day for them to effectively be a physician and have a personal life. We bring in resources that are key to helping physicians resolve issue in their professional and personal lives."

Over the years, PWS has researched in-depth the issues facing doctors and nurses. Obviously, the demand for health care puts a crunch on their time, but Best also says some physicians experience compassion fatigue, where their feelings aren't aligned with the reasons they went into medicine.

Other doctors and nurses struggle to work with medical professionals and communicate effectively with them in a team environment. Assistance can even boil down to help learning how to use new technology in their hospitals, clinics or offices.

"Stress and burn-out are epidemic," adds Lori Brostrom, vice president of marketing at Physician Wellness Services. "Some of the comments are just heartbreaking as they struggle to deal with work-life balance. They're more prone to depression … Time is an issue and there's lots of carryover into their personal lives. Finding time to take care of themselves is key. A lot of them don't have physicians themselves."
