While leadership might come more naturally to some, it is a skill that can be learned and developed. The best leaders continue to work on their leadership skills throughout their careers, and Sonya Shelton, founder and CEO of Executive Leadership Consulting, offers these tips to improve leadership skills.

Vision

Before leaders can gain followers, they must first know where they are going. Followers must be inspired and motivated by a follower's vision.

Recommended For You

Awareness

Leaders must be aware of the immediate situation. While this includes self-awareness, leaders must also be aware of colleagues, their organizations and their individual environments.

Integrity

Followers want to look up to leaders they can count on and trust. When leaders possess strong integrity, they can develop trust, respect and credibility among colleagues.

Leading Yourself First

Leaders should first lead themselves. By doing so, leaders have a better understanding of how they can inspire, motivate and encourage others.

Influence

When it comes down to it, leadership is about influence. Leaders must influence others to steer them toward their visions.

Attitude

No matter the situation, the attitude a leader takes is a choice, and that attitude trickles down to others. Leaders should take full responsibility for their attitudes.

Evolving

Positive change comes from leaders. While leaders do not necessarily have to act as innovators, they should identify and back good ideas.

Learning

Even the most successful leaders never stop learning, and this is particularly true when it comes to their mistakes. An open mind, listening and exploring are all required for learning.

Connecting

Leaders should encourage colleagues, show they care and be available for challenges colleagues might face.

Empower others

To be a great leader, one must help others succeed. Leaders should be there to help colleagues do their best and always think of ways to encourage others.

"In today's business environment, leading by the power of your position is no longer enough," Shelton says. "These key leadership strategies will help you make a bigger difference in your organization and ultimately increase your business results."
