In the past year, industrial jobs in New Hampshire grew 0.5 percent for a gain of 335 jobs, according to the 2013 New Hampshire Manufacturers Register, an industrial directory published annually by Manufacturers' News Inc. in Evanston, Ill.
Based on this increase, New Hampshire accounts for 2,628 manufacturers with 82,132 workers, MNI finds.
"New Hampshire continues to see its manufacturing sector improve," says Tom Dubin, president of MNI. "The state's educated work force and low business costs have made it easier for manufacturers to expand."
According to MNI, the largest manufacturing sectors in New Hampshire by employment are electronics with 13,258 jobs, up 1.8 percent; industrial machinery and equipment with 12,801 jobs for no significant change; and instruments and related products with 9,013 industrial jobs, also virtually unchanged.
Of the industrial sectors with job growth are paper products at 10.2 percent, transportation equipment at 4.9 percent, chemicals at 3.9 percent, rubber and plastics at 3.8 percent, and lumber and wood at 1 percent, MNI finds. Conversely, losses are found in printing and publishing at minus 6.6 percent, fabricated metals at minus 5.3 percent, furniture and fixtures at minus 4.7 percent, and textiles and apparel at minus 3 percent.
Manchester comes in as New Hampshire's top city for manufacturing employment, accounting 8,268 jobs, a decline of 3.2 percent, followed by Nashua with 5,504 jobs, an increase of 3.4 percent, MNI finds. Third-ranked Hudson is home to 4,377 jobs, an increase of 2.8 percent. Next is Londonderry with 4,266 jobs, a decrease of 3.4 percent. Portsmouth is No. 5 with 3,644 industrial jobs, up 6 percent.
